Here’s a (growing) list of open source business software that can be used for both business and personal use. It ranges from software to run underlying business infrastructure, to the end user desktop experience.

Libre Office - free and open source Microsoft Office alternative for documents, spreadsheets etc
Open Office – Free alternative to MS Office
GnuCash - open source accounting
Wine - Open Source Windows Emulator, for running Windows applications on Linux and other operating systems.
Gimp - Image Manipulation
Scribus - Desk top publishing package for newspapers, news letters, brochure design and other paper publications

OfBiz - VERY comprehensive ERP & MRP software. This has been going some years and is now part of the Apache foundation.
OpenERP - Open source, community and commercially backed ERP product – looks very strong, and I’ll be investigating it further! Now called Odoo…
OpenCRX – very strong, true opensource CRM software.
ERPNext - a relative newcomer to the ERP Scene but with great potential

Linux – more well known than BSD, essentially the same (but different)
Ubuntu – well supported Linux distro, available in desktop and server forms
Mint – User friendly, growing linux distro
Debian - rock solid distro, more of a techie’s choice

Apache – the daddy of opensource web servers
nginx – the new kid on the block

mySQL - probably the most famous of free, open source databases.
PostgreSQL - a well established, rock solid and production grade database service

Icinga - a fork of Nagios
